Kentlake Freshman vs. Kent-Meridian Freshman 9/14/09
 
 Kent Meridian played ball controlled offense to overcome the Kentlake Falcons 28 - 8 at French Field. The game was much closer than the score indicates, as K-M had a big play 60-yard TD run and an interception return for a TD late in the game. Kentlake had 133 yards of Total Offense (76 yards rushing on 24 carries by 7 different ball carriers, and 57 yards passing on 4 completions out of 14 attempts). In addition to Nick Cruz' 16 yard TD run as the offensive highlight, Morgan Jones had an interception on the defensive side.

Kentlake Freshman vs. Jefferson Freshman 9/21/09

 

The Kentlake Freshman used their defense and special teams to dominate the Thomas Jefferson freshman 32-12 at KLHS. The Kentlake offense finally got going in the 4th quarter, getting touchdown runs from QB Austin Homolka and WB Caleb Mathena. Kentlake's other TDs were scored by Cameron Newell and Jake Lamb on interception returns and Caleb Mathena on a kickoff return. The Falcons controlled the game despite attempting only 4 passes the entire game, and had two other touchdowns called back for penalties. The frosh now have a 1-1 record heading into their next game, at Federal Way Monday 9/28 at 3:30pm.

The boys started out well with a long sustained drive in the 1st quarter but were unable to punch it in.   Federal Way got it going in the 2nd quarter (too much size and speed) and never looked back. Caleb Mathena led the Falcons rushing attack on offense and made numerous tackles on defense. Jake Lamb and Steffin Church had interceptions on defense for Kentlake.


Kentlake JV vs. Federal Way JV 9/28/09

 

Wow, what an exciting game.  The KL JV team won in overtime 28 - 22 over Federal Way.  Conner Crooks scored the first TD on  a pass from Adam Bese.  Trevor Baldwin ran a kickoff back for a TD.  With just over 1 minute in the game the score 22- 14 Federal way.  KL moved the Ball from their own 10 yard line with a number of great passes capped off by a TD pass to Andrew Miccile and another pass to Conner Crooks for the 2 point conversion to send it into OT.  Well, almost.  On the ensuing kickoff FW fumbled and KL took over with 5 seconds left.  FW intercepted the pass and Tanner Lucas saved the game in regular time running down a Federal Way player  with no time on the clock, he finally got him down at the 2 yard line.Trevor Baldwin stopped Federal Way with a pick in OT.  Adam Bese hit Bones over the middle for an 18 yard gain and then Trevor ran it in from about 8 yards out to seal the victory.  All the guys contributed big plays way to go JV Falcons!!


Kentlake Freshman vs. Peninsula Freshman 10/5/09

 

 The Peninsula Seahawks came to Kentlake HS to face the undermanned Falcon freshmen, missing their top 2 quarterbacks and numerous other players due to illness or injury. Peninsula put up 35 points before the Falcons avoided the shutout, with a 64-yard touchdown pass from Morgan Jones to Nick Orse in the 4th quarter. Caleb Mathena led the Falcon rushing attack and he and Jared Mackie were standouts on defense and special teams. Mackie also recovered a Peninsula fumble.
The next game is Monday October 12th at Auburn

Kentlake JV vs. Auburn JV 10/12/09

 

The Kentlake JV won another exciting game in overtime, this time beating Auburn 22 - 14.  The game started a little rough when Auburn picked off a pThe Falcon freshmen were down 26-0 at halftime, but came back and owned the second half, playing well in the 32-14 loss at Auburn. Turnovers hurt the Falcons early in the game and despite the second half improvement, were unable to overtake the Trojans. Kentlake was able to amass over 200 yards in total offense, led on the ground by Caleb Mathena who carried 7 times for 52 yards and 1 touchdown. Quarterbacks Morgan Jones and Steffin Church led an effective passing game, combining to complete 10 of 16 passes for 142 yards and 1 touchdown. The Falcons hope to continue the positive momentum into their next game, at home vs Tahoma on Monday 10/19.ass in the 1st quarter and took it to the house for 6.  Kentlake fought back and scored 6 when Ryan Archibald hit Bones in the end zone.  The extra point failed, score 7 - 6 Auburn.  Kentlake took the lead on a Cody Duncan touchdown and 2 point conversion to make it 14 - 7.  With just over a minute to play Auburn broke through the line and caused a fumble which they ran in for a 40 yard TD, made the extra point and regulation time expired in a tie 14 - 14.  Kentlake started with the ball in OT and drove down the field capped by a 5 yard TD scamper by Archibald.  Kentlake went for 2 points and Cody Duncan ran it in.  Auburns turn, they gained about 9 yards and then the Kentlake D made a great play causing a fumble and recovering to end the game.  Kentlake JV's are 2-0 in overtime this year, must be the conditioning!!!

Kenlake Freshman 7 vs. Tahoma 6  10/19/09
 
The Falcon freshmen scored a touchdown in 2nd quarter and held on in a tight defense-dominated game against rival Tahoma.
The Bears scored first on a TD early in the 2nd quarter on, but the Kentlake D stuffed their 2-point conversion attempt. On the Falcons' next offensive possession, they moved steadily down the field, and used Caleb Mathena in the "Wildcat Formation" for a 38 yard run around left end to the Tahoma 3 yard line. Steffin Church threw to Morgan Jones for the touchdown on the following play. Jared Mackie's PAT gave the Falcons the lead they never relinquished. The Bears made a valiant effort in the last 2 minutes of the game, driving to the Falcons' 20 yard line, but Jacob Bailey sacked their QB on 4th down to seal the win. The Kentlake frosh improved to 2-4 on the season with 2 games remaining. Next up the Falcons will play at Auburn-Riverside on Monday October 26th.

Kentlake Freshman 12 vs. Auburn Riverside Freshman 0 10/26/09
 
On a cold, windy, and sometimes rainy afternoon at Auburn-Riverside HS, the Kentlake freshmen used a ball-controlled running game and stellar defense to shutout the Ravens 12-0. The Falcons got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd quarter. CB Nick Orse intercepted a pitch on a Raven option play, giving the Falcons the ball on the A-R 38 yard line. RB Austin Homolka carried the next 3 times resulting in 2 first downs, and QB Steffin Church carried for 7 yards on a keeper. On the next play RB Vinny Chase went 8 yards up the middle for the first touchdown, giving Kentlake a 6-0 lead. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the Falcons put together a time-consuming drive, resulting in a 13 yard TD pass from Steffin Church to WB Morgan Jones. A last minute Raven attempt at a long pass play was intercepted by CB Jake Lamb. The Falcons ran the ball 37 times for 140 yards, led by Austin Homolka's 14 carries for 97 yards. Steffin Church attempted only 6 passes, completing 4 (all to Morgan Jones) for 53 yards and a touchdown.
The Falcons improved their record to 3-4; they go for their 3rd win in a row in the season finale against arch-rival Kentwood next Monday 11/2 at 4pm at Kentlake.

The Falcon freshmen saved their best for the last game, a 34-0 shutout of rival Kentwood at the Kentlake HS field. The Falcon offensive and defensive lines dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Falcons scored two quick touchdowns in the 1st Quarter to go up 14-0, on runs of 34 and 42 yards by WB Caleb Mathena the first 2 times he touched the ball. The Falcons increased their lead to 20-0 in 3rd quarter on another long TD run of 48 yards by Mathena. But Caleb wasn't done, adding an 86 yard TD run early in the 4th Quarter. Vinny Chase closed out the scoring for Kentlake with a 61 yard TD run of his own late in the 4th. The Falcons attempted only 4 passes the entire game, with the O-line (kudos to Tyler Deskins, Austin Tinnel, Gabe Carillo, George Markovich, Zane Bernhard, and Nick Shilipetar) blocking so well for the running game. The Falcons finished with almost 400 yards rushing on 33 carries; unofficially, Caleb Mathena ran 13 times for 255 yards and 4 TDs. Defensively, Kentlake shut down the Conk running game, forcing them to the air. Jake Lamb intercepted 2 passes and Matt Nutting had a pick of his own to stop Kentwood drives.
Congrats boys on a great season! You started 1-4 and dug deep and worked hard, winning your last 3 in row to finish at 4-4. You allowed only 6 points defensively the last 3 games, with 2 consecutive shutouts! Your fans and school are proud of your efforts!
